A Recipe for Lemonade

August 17, 2009 at 7:15 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Hi ! Ameena and Lee’Sa  here and this August is pretty hot right? So, here is a delicious recipie for a glass of lemonade!

The secret to this lemonade recipe is to use simple syrup, made by boiling together sugar and water, then cooling. The sugar is completely dissolved and blends beautifully with the tart lemon.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Juice from 4-6 lemons
  • 4 cups cold water

Preparation:

Blend 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar well in small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently, until sugar dissolves completely. Let cool and refrigerate. (This is the simple syrup.)Mix the simple syrup well with the juice from 4-6 lemons (strained or not, as you like) and stir well. Add 4 cups cold water and mix. Try using sparkling water for some fizz! Pour into thermos or large jug, adding thin lemon slices if you’d like. I like to make more lemonade and freeze it in ice cube trays, adding the cubes to the lemonade so it’s never diluted as the ‘ice’ melts. This amount serves 6 people

You can increase the amounts of this recipe proportionately, depending on the amount of lemonade you want.

P.S.  Have an adult help you with this recipe. Also have fun!

The Insect Morning

By: Ameena Walker

June 16, 2009

This morning, we observed our caterpillars. They were all in chrysalis! It is very exciting to see them all. I was elated! The monarch was in its J yesterday. The class did not get to see the Pupa dance. I just can’t wait until the monarchs turn into beautiful butterflies! I really hope the Monarchs hatch before school let’s out. I loved raising monarchs in September. I love Monarch butterflies.

Yesterday, our Green Darner a.k.a. Mosquito Hawk hatched, but, we could not find it! The whole class was so upset. The Green Darner is the biggest Dragonfly in North America! Then, this morning, we spotted the Green Darner!! It was on the window. We could not believe our eyes. The Green Darner has great eyesight of 360 degrees. He can see in a total circle! This awesome Dragonfly can hunt on a prey bigger than itself! For example, the Green Darner can hunt on a hummingbird. Soon, we will release the Green Darner. Well, to put this story in other words, we had a bug-tastic morning.

Our Amazing Trip to the Refuge!

June 11, 2009 at 1:29 pm | In Uncategorized | 4 Comments

On June 10th our class and environmental Club went to the Wildlife Rufuge. When we arrived the whole class was excited even Ms. Lenahan. First we had to meet the people that work there. Then we divided into teams of 5. My team was Ayala, Arielle, and Adam. Our chaperone was Chanelle. She taught us how to measure wind speed and humidity. We went to the forest, field, and pond to check the wind speed and humidity.

Near the afternoon it was lunch time. It was fun during lunch time. After lunch time we went to the gift shop. It was very small. Then we went back on the bus. When every body got seated Colby gave us field guides to help us see what we would see on the bird watch. The bird watch was vey fun we saw a lot of birds! After that we all went on top of the tower well almost all of us. Ameena was too scared to go up .When we finished bird watching it was time to go home. And that’s how our class spent the day at the amazing wildlife refuge!
